These patches of green to the east of the Sonoran desert are 'desert grassland'. They're strictly outside the desert, but much more arid than true prairie grasslands.
The dominant plants in this ecosystem are the bunchgrasses, but these are punctuated from time to time by isolated succulents or agaves, reminders of the nearby desert. We'll be visiting these grasslands on one of our trips.
